A healthy early-colonizing bacterium that naturally antagonizes S. mutans through hydrogen peroxide production. Typically 0.5-5% of total oral bacteria. Higher S. sanguinis relative to S. mutans is one of the cleaner cavity-vs-healthy biofilm signals.
Do
Maintain regular brushing and flossing without daily antiseptic mouthwashes. S. sanguinis recolonizes cleaned tooth surfaces within hours; preserving its niche is what matters.
Avoid
Daily chlorhexidine and frequent sugary snacks. Both shift the Streptococcus community away from healthy S. sanguinis toward cavity-causing S. mutans.
